Most Americans, Including an Increasing Number of Republicans, Approve of Trump Impeachment Inquiry, Polls Show

According to a Washington Post-Shar School poll published Tuesday, 58% of respondents agree that Congress was right to begin the impeachment inquiry, while 38% disagree. The new figure is a big shift from recent polling numbers.

This poll was administered by telephone Oct. 1-6 among a random national sample of 1,007 adults. The Post explained that the margin of sampling error is plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

Another poll, the USA Today/Ipsos survey, tallied just days earlier, showed that 45% of Americans believe the House of Representatives should vote to impeach in response to a whistleblower’s complaint alleging Trump leveraged military aid to pressure Ukraine into investigating political rival Joe Biden and his son. Some 38% of respondents said the House should not vote to impeach him, and 17% said they didn’t know.

Further, 44% of Americans think the Senate, which would be expected to hold a trial of the president after a House impeachment vote, should vote to convict Trump, while 35% said the Senate shouldn’t and 21% said they didn’t know, according to the poll.

For much of the year, other Washington Post-Schar School polls reflected a country that was mostly in opposition of impeachment, but recent revelations appear to have pushed Americans to shift their stance.
